March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction Wilmington, NC

Thursday night I attended (volunteered at) the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction.  This an annual function to raise money for the March of Dimes.  This is how it works:  Several restaurants, six this year, cook food for the event.  In the past, people voted on the food but they longer do that.  Now, everyone gets a variety of food to enjoy from very diverse restaurants.  This years restaurants were Anntony’s Caribbean Cafe, Elijah’s, Jack Mackerel’s Island Grill, Spencer’s, The Little Dipper and The Pilot House.

Tickets for the event were $100 a person.  There was a silent and live auction with over fifty items combined.  They also has a “Stock the Bar” cart raffled off and a lollipop pool.  That’s were I worked, at the lollipop pool.  The “Stock the Bar” raffle was for a beer/liquour cart that had eleven bottles of liquour and seventy bottles of beer.  Tickets were $10 a piece or 5 for $40.  The lollipop tree had several wrapped surprise gifts and a winner was able to choose a gift if they picked the right lollipop.  Winner lollipops had a mark on the bottom that was covered up until it was picked from a box.  It was $20 for 3 tries.

Back to the auctions.  The silent auction had some great stuff.  It actually took me a really long time to look at all of it.  The live auction also had some good stuff.  They had things like a Hawaii vacation, a SC golf vacation, a Caribbean vacation, a catered Christmas party, airline tickets, and much more.  I was really impressed with the turn-out and how much money was raised.

In the middle of the live auction they stopped to tell the story of a premature baby.  If you didn’t know the March of Dimes mission,  here it is:

“The March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign is a multimillion-dollar research, awareness and education effort that helps families have healthier babies. “

This particular baby unfortunately did not survive her battle with prematurity.  The auction was held in memory of her.  It was a very touching and sad story.  Afterwards, donations were asked for starting at $1000, then $500, then $250, then $100, and finally $50.  People raised their bid cards to donate at whatever amount they felt comfortable.   I believe over $5500 was raised at that particular point.  It was very moving.

The whole event went very well.  I believe it was the nicest one I have ever attended.  (It was my third time)  I’m very grateful for everything the March of Dimes does.
