Fish oil, the savior of humans

Last night, while reading the latest issue of Men’s Health, I came across an article about the benefits of fish oil.  I was amazed at what the article said about fish oil and how it could help your body.  The article had many statements and interviews with medical doctors and researchers.  The article is titled, The Government’s Big Fish Story by Sabrina Rubin Erdely

The article starts of with the story about Randal McCloy, the 27 year old coal miner from West Virginia who was the only survivor from the horrific mine explosion in Sago, West Virginia a year ago.  McCloy had been trapped for 41 hours buried over 2 miles underground.  McCloy was in a coma, suffering from shock, and his lungs collapsed and kidneys stopped working.  The doctors also feared that he had suffered great brain damage.  As far as anyone knows on record, he survived the longest time of any human exposed to carbon monoxide poisoning.  While McCloy lay in coma, his doctor, Julian Bailes, M.D. decided to give him 15,000 milligrams of DHA and EPA, which is fish oil.

After several weeks, McCloy unexpectedly awoke from the coma.  But he didn’t stop there, over the next weeks he regained his memory, sight, speech, kidney function, etc.  McCloy is at home still recovering, still taking daily fish oil prescribed by Dr. Bailes.  Dr. Bailes states, “I would say he should be on it for a lifetime, but then, I think everybody should.”

The article goes on to talk about other benefits of fish oil, such as cardiovascular and joint health.  The article enlists many points of view, one from some government official stating that maybe some research points to fish oil as being helpful, they FDA will still not endorse it.  The majority of medical doctors interviewed for the article are strongly supportive.  The interesting point in the article, is that even the naysayers did not condemn the fish oil, they just seem to keep repeating the FDA’s stance on not concluding it is beneficial.

Well, I went out today and bought my first bottle of fish oil.  There are many different kinds on the market.  I chose Nature’s Way brand called Fisol.  You can buy fish oil in liquid form or in capsules.  I chose capsules because they seem to be a little easier on the wallet.  I took my first dose today, and will let you know in a couple of weeks if I feel any different.
